About Dr. Samaan

John Samaan MD MPH specializes in the treatment of co-occurring substance use and psychiatric disorders at 2nd Chance Treatment Center. He offers his clinical expertise to patients in the communities of Phoenix, Gilbert and Glendale, AZ.

A native of Troy, Michigan, USA (a suburb of Detroit, MI), Dr. Samaan received his undergraduate degree in Bachelor in Art and Science Psychology Degree from Oakland University in Rochester Hills, MI. As for his medical school education, Dr. Samaan obtained his medical degree from Xavier University Aruba School of Medicine in Aruba, Netherland Antilles. He then went onto on to obtain an extra Masters in Public Health Degree at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, in Miami, FL USA.  After a year or so of additional research and learning more about the different psychiatric disorders, including substance use disorders, that seem to prevalent in the community, he then attended and completed his General Psychiatry Residency Training at Larkin Community Hospital, Department of Psychiatry, in South Miami, FL USA.


He is involved in many different aspects of psychiatric and preventive medicine research.  His topics of interest include looking at possible comorbidities prevention, treatment of anxiety, stress, substance abuse and depression for his patient population.  With his MPH degree and previous research experience, he has gained much experience with preventive medicine, evidence-based and observational studies. As well, Dr. Samaan was fairly involved in substance abuse research in his early years of residency.  This seems to be evident by his many national psychiatric conferences he attended to present some of his work. In fact, Dr. Samaan was fortunate on publishing a case study for the Journal of Case Reports in Psychiatry , entitled  Synthetic Cannabis Overdose and Withdrawal in a Young Adult: A Case Report, Commentary on Regulation, and Review of the Literature.  Samaan J, Ferrer GF, Akinyemi B, Junquera P, Oms J, Dumenigo R. 


Dr. Samaan is licensed to practice medicine in the States of Arizona and Florida. In his leisure time, he enjoys water sports activities, and serving the youth congregation at his local church.
